FAQs
Questions Families Often Ask First
Starting can feel overwhelming. These answers reduce a little of the friction before you reach out.
Getting Started
Do I need a diagnosis or referral before contacting Halcyon?
No. Families reach out at different stages: before diagnosis, after diagnosis, during school concerns, or when they simply feel that something is not working. You can start with a short enquiry. If a diagnosis, referral, or further assessment becomes relevant, we will explain that clearly.
How do I know which service my child needs?
You do not need to decide that on your own. Tell us what prompted you to look for support, and we will help determine the most appropriate starting point—whether that is ABA Therapy, Specialised Instruction, a combined pathway, or another recommendation.
What happens after I send an enquiry?
We review the information you send, contact you to understand your priorities, and guide the next step. That may be an initial conversation, a few further questions, or a recommendation for the most suitable service. A short summary is enough to begin.
What if Halcyon is not the right fit?
If another route would serve your child or family better, we will be honest about that. Where possible, we will explain why and guide you toward the kind of support that may be more appropriate.
Is support only for young children?
Halcyon supports individuals from infancy through to adulthood, depending on the right fit, goals, and team capacity. If you are unsure whether your child or young adult falls within scope, start with a short enquiry and we will clarify the best next step.
About ABA and the Programme
What is ABA therapy?
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach to understanding how learning and behaviour work, and to building meaningful skills such as communication, independence, social understanding, regulation, and participation. At Halcyon, ABA is used to remove barriers and open up everyday life—not to make a child someone they are not.
Isn't ABA controversial? Does it try to change who my child is?
It is a fair question, and we take it seriously. Halcyon's practice is assent-informed and neurodiversity-informed. We focus on functional skills and reducing real barriers while respecting your child's identity, dignity, and communication as non-negotiable. We are always happy to explain exactly what we recommend and why.
Will my child become dependent on therapy?
Our aim is the opposite. Support is designed to build capability and fade where appropriate over time. We measure success by growing independence, participation, and confidence—by how useful support becomes, and how much less support a child may eventually need.
What qualifications does your team hold?
Every programme is designed and supervised by a Qualified Behaviour Analyst. Our wider team holds recognised credentials including ABAT (QABA), autism certification (IBCCES), Makaton, and AAC training. Full credentials are listed on our Team page, and QBA supervision is included in every programme.
How is my child's programme actually built?
Not as a list of separate goals. We assess skills first, choose the right starting point, then build a connected, three-tier curriculum: foundation skills, extended life-skill domains, and dedicated modules for important areas standard curricula often miss. You can read the full architecture on our Approach page.
Costs and Practicalities
What does it cost?
Direct therapy is charged at a single hourly rate, and clinical supervision by a Qualified Behaviour Analyst is included at no extra cost. Programmes can be stepped up or down as your child's progress and your family's capacity change. We will talk through the best starting point during your initial consultation.
Can I claim from medical aid?
We will explain payment options during your initial consultation. If you need invoices or supporting documentation for reimbursement, please ask and we will clarify what we can provide. Halcyon cannot guarantee medical aid reimbursement.
Can Halcyon help with both therapy and education support?
Yes. Halcyon is built to work across clinical and educational needs on one shared curriculum, so support is more coordinated and practical. Your child may need one pathway or a combination, depending on skills assessment and family priorities.
Do you work with schools or other professionals?
Where relevant and appropriate, we collaborate with schools and other professionals to support more consistent planning and implementation. Our goal is to make strategies understandable and usable across the settings that matter in your child's life.
How much detail should I include in the enquiry form?
A short summary is enough. Tell us what prompted you to reach out and what kind of support you are hoping for. To protect your child's privacy, please do not include detailed medical information, diagnoses, school reports, ID numbers, or other sensitive personal information in the form.
Can I send information on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is for simple contact and coordination only. Please do not send detailed clinical, school, medical, or personal information over WhatsApp. We will guide you on safer ways to share information if it is needed later.
